Ahead of the UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) on 21 September 2023, UHC2030 is pleased to invite you to a virtual information session. We will present the latest key findings from the State of Universal Health Coverage Commitment Review and the work of the UN High-Level Meeting Task Force on UHC.

Through a consultative, multi-stakeholder process, the Task Force has developed a draft Universal Health Coverage Action Agenda from the UHC Movement, building on the 2019 Key Asks, to further advance progress on delivering health for all at the three UN High-level meetings on health in 2023 and beyond.

During the virtual information session, you will be informed about opportunities to participate in an online consultation on the UHC Action Agenda (6th January-6th February 2023) and how to engage in the multi-stakeholder hearing led by the President of the UN General Assembly (April 2023).

English, French, and Spanish interpretation will be available. Kindly note that the virtual platform has a maximum capacity of 500 participants. If you experience any difficulty in joining the information session, kindly note that the session will be recorded and posted on the UHC2030 YouTube channel following the event.

Action Agenda consultation

Background

In 2019, world leaders endorsed the most ambitious and comprehensive political declaration on health in history at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on universal health coverage. It committed for all people to have access to quality, essential, effective and affordable health services and commodities without experiencing financial hardship and without discrimination by 2030.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, progress on universal health coverage was off track, and the pandemic has further widened inequities in access to health services that people need. The three UN High-Level Meetings on health in 2023 (universal health coverage; pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response; and tuberculosis) represent a crucial political opportunity to emphasize the value of universal health coverage to strengthen national and international resilience and improve health security.

The UN High-Level Meeting Task Force on UHC brings together a group of twenty representatives from UHC constituencies and beyond committed to accelerate progress towards delivering health for all. They have worked together with the UHC2030 Secretariat, supported by Chatham House, to prepare From Commitment to Action: Universal Health Coverage Action Agenda from the UHC Movement, building on the Key Asks developed in 2019 by the UHC Movement, and based on the latest key findings from the State of UHC Commitment Review, recent literature, and inputs from key stakeholders. This Action Agenda will be presented to the President of the UN General Assembly as an official input into the draft Political Declaration.

Other opportunities to engage on the road to the High-Level Meeting on UHC

The President of the UN General Assembly will host an interactive multi-stakeholder hearing on UHC in April 2023. The summary report from the hearing constitutes an official input for the drafting the Political Declaration on UHC.

Intergovernmental negotiations on the Political Declaration on UHC will start shortly after the hearing and should close by the end of July 2023.
